Teeswater Culross “Old
Boys Reunion”
The first Reunion was held in 1905. The purpose of this Reunion was
to bring together families who had been pioneers in Culross and Teeswater
in 1860s to 1990s eras. Many sons and daughters of these pioneers had
become the pioneers who went west to open up and settle in Western Canada
and the United States. In some cases the whole family had gone west to
homestead. For example the reeve of Teeswater was the first mayor of Pilot
Mound Manitoba in 1883.
The plan was to have a Reunion every ten years, but by 1915, World
War I was everyone’s concern. So in 1919 became the year for the next
Reunion. It has been held every tenth year since that time. This is the
eleventh such Reunion.
In 1905 the term “Old Boys” was used to denote those people who would
be returning to Culross & Teeswater to renew old acquaintances or
visit their old home or relive the memories of their younger years. In
1905 organizers of the Reunion didn’t have to worry too much about the
term “Old Boys” vs. “Old Girls” compared to what the reaction would be
like in 2009. So down through the years “Old Boys” has become the accepted
name for the Reunion.
Making a profit is not the intent of the Reunion, but all Reunions
showed a profit. In theses cases the money is earmarked for some worth
while community need. For example in 1929, the local cenotaph was dedicated
to those men & women who fell in World War I.
